DP World Saint John Makes a Significant Investment to Better Enable the Flow of Trade

Saint John, NB, June 13, 2022 – DP World, a global leader in logistics and provider of smart supply chain solutions is making a historic technology and asset investment in the DP World Saint John multi-purpose container terminal.

This investment will enhance and modernize operations at DP World Saint John allowing it to provide a wider variety of logistics services from transloading to warehousing and beyond. DP World Saint John currently offers container and non-containerized cargo handling services with 400,000 square feet of bonded warehousing capacity including container stuffing/destuffing, and other cargo handling solutions, all within a designated on-terminal facility.

Cargo volumes have been steadily increasing and more growth is expected as additional logistics and supply chain solutions are added. Since DP World became the operator in 2017, several of the top shipping lines have added Saint John as a port of call including, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd which has both a regular and seasonal service in addition to MSC who has been calling the port for over a decade. Port Saint John provides connections to over 500 ports in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

“This significant investment is about building the right trade ecosystem to make Port Saint John the logistics hub for the east coast,” said Maksim Mihic, CEO & General Manager DP World (Canada) Inc., “By creating additional capacity, we provide more options for Canadian exporters to reach global markets leading to sustainable economic growth for the region.”

Highlights of the terminal technology and asset investment include:

  • Two super-post-Panamax quay cranes (capable of reaching 21 rows wide)
  • Over a dozen additional reach stackers
  • Additional internal transfer vehicles (ITVs)
  • Additional container trailers
  • Technology solutions that include an upgrade to the terminal operating system, a new truck gate system, and enterprise-wide financial management systems

This is the second set of cranes to arrive in Saint John since DP World became the operator. These additional cranes will allow two container vessels to be handled simultaneously and are expected to arrive in late 2022. These cranes will allow the terminal to handle ships of up to about 10,000 twenty-foot-equivalent (TEUs).  Once commissioned, the terminal will have a total of four quay cranes.

Port Saint John is the only Atlantic Canadian gateway port with access to three Class I railways. The recent CSX acquisition of Pan Am Railways Inc. along with existing connections through CN and CP provides fast and reliable intermodal connectivity to key Canadian and US markets including Toronto, Montreal, New England and the US Midwest.

We are thrilled that our partners at DP World are investing in both new terminal equipment and additional larger gantry cranes at Port Saint John. These significant investments will enable the terminal to further this period of remarkable growth, and provide much needed resiliency in Canada’s supply chain,” said Craig Bell Estabrooks, President & CEO, Port Saint John.
