Shore Power Delivers Environmental and Economic Benefits
Ocean vessels need power while they are docked to keep the lights on, and to maintain other essential functions like heating and cooling. Shore power provides land-based, low-emission hydroelectricity for these ships, so their diesel-fueled auxiliary engines can be turned off. This alternative to burning diesel goes a long way in reducing air emissions and improving local air quality. The technology also allows ship owners to reduce fuel costs.
Expanded Shore Power Capacity at Port of Prince Rupert
DP World Prince Rupert’s Fairview Container Terminal is one of the latest ports to expand shore power capacity. Through a partnership between the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA), DP World, and BC Hydro, the new infrastructure and necessary upgrades were installed, so that ships at both the north and south berths are now able to shut down their generators and plug into the electrical grid. The move is forecast to reduce carbon emissions by almost 30,000 tonnes annually.
The $7.6m project received $2.2m of its funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Challenge Fund. It’s one of several PRPA climate action and air quality focused initiatives that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy, and promote cleaner energy sources.

The Port of Prince Rupert joins other DP World operations in Canada using shore power. Another is the Port of Vancouver, where it plays a critical role in the helping the port meet its sustainability goals.
